What is the SKY Program? The SKY Program is a restoration group that works on airplanes in east Tennessee. We have the passion to work with our hands and minds for the benefit of youth in our community. The youth in our program gain many useful skills and experiences, from mechanical know-how and problem-solving to learning how to work as a group toward a common goal. While our primary focus is aviation related, we include many topics necessary for becoming a productive and reliable adult. We are a non-profit 501c3 made up of adult volunteers and youth participants. And yes, we have fun!

How can I sign my young person up? We are currently accepting applications from youth interested in aviation, ages 14-18. The application is available on the download page from this website. Each youth application must include an adult application, as well (from a family member or guardian).

How does a young person get to fly the SKY Program airplane? Youth participants earn time in the plane through their weekly work sessions in the hangar. For every 10 hours of learning/work session time, an hour of flight time is earned. The only expense is the fuel cost, which varies depending on the price of fuel and the time of the flight. Generally speaking, the plane burns eight gallons/hour. Youth with no or low time in the program may reimburse the program for flight time at a nominal rate to cover maintenance expenses. All fights require a Certified Flight Instructor, or CFI. The SKY Program CFIs may donate their time.

What other general questions do you have? Please let us know by emailing us at Youthavpro@gmail.com We want to make sure you have all the information you need and may add your question to our FAQ page.

What happens after an application is submitted? An application is the first step, but is not a guarantee of placement in the program. Our program’s capacity is a function of the amount of dedicated adult volunteers; however, our desire is to grow and reach as many interested individuals as possible. Once your young person’s application is submitted, it will be reviewed and if accepted, an invitation will be offered by the Program Director(s). If the program reaches capacity, then a waitlist begins. It is critical that youth participants be self-starters with a strong desire to learn.

Is it true that your program participants built an airplane? Yes, we did! And in addition to airplanes, the SKY Program is also building responsible youth! Our SKY Program airplane, built over the period of three years, is a fully-restored 1959 Cessna 172 straight tail. It has a O-300 six cylinder engine, 145 Hp. And she flies great!
